Rather than continue Ken Akamatsu's harem comedy Negima in the conventional way, the filmmakers reworked the first episodes, shifting the focus of the story. The basic premise remains the same: To complete his training as a wizard, 10-year-old Welsh prodigy Negi Springfield must spend a term as a middle school English and homeroom teacher at Mahora Academy, a posh girls' school in Japan. The students initially refuse to believe the pint-sized Negi is their instructor, then they decide he's adorable and compete for his affection. The original series stressed the fan service comedy: When Negi tried to erase Asuna's memory of him using magic, he erased her panties by mistake. The "Re-Imagined" version emphasizes the Gothic fantasy elements, especially the conflict between Negi and the vampire Evangeline, who was defeated 15 years earlier by his father, The Thousand Master. Season Two is both talkier and choppier, with scenes from different episodes edited together to establish the altered storyline. The filmmakers use extensive narration over re-purposed footage and add moving mattes to static images. Not all the transitions are smooth: Negi frequently turns up with unexplained bumps and bruises, and Chamo the Ermine appears out of nowhere. There's less emphasis on well-endowed teenaged girls fondling a prepubescent little boy, although that disquieting element remains in the background. Neither version of Negima can really be called superior, and any preference between the two is a quesiton of personal taste. In the 1940s, the wit of playwright Noel Coward (Design for Living) and the craft of filmmaker David Lean (Lawrence of Arabia) melded harmoniously in one of cinemas greatest writer-director collaborations. With the wartime military drama sensation In Which We Serve, Coward and Lean (along with producing partners Ronald Neame and Anthony Havelock-Allan) embarked on a series of literate, socially engaged, and enormously entertaining pictures that ranged from domestic epic (This Happy Breed) to whimsical comedy (Blithe Spirit) to poignant romance (Brief Encounter). These films created a lasting testament to Cowards artistic legacy and introduced Leans visionary talents to the world.

In Which We Serve In the midst of World War II, the renowned playwright Noel Coward engaged a young film editor named David Lean to help him realize his vision for an action drama about a group of Royal Navy sailors (roles that would be filled by Coward himself, Great Expectations Bernard Miles, and Ryans Daughters John Mills, among others) fighting the Germans in the Mediterranean. Coward and Lean ended up codirecting the large-scale projectan impressive undertaking, especially considering that neither of them had directed for the big screen before (this would be Cowards only such credit). Cutting between a major naval battle and flashbacks to the mens lives before they left home, In Which We Serve (an Oscar nominee for best picture) was a major breakthrough for both filmmakers and a sensitive and stirring piece of propaganda.
