Rather than continue Ken Akamatsu's harem comedy Negima in the conventional way, the filmmakers reworked the first episodes, shifting the focus of the story. The basic premise remains the same: To complete his training as a wizard, 10-year-old Welsh prodigy Negi Springfield must spend a term as a middle school English and homeroom teacher at Mahora Academy, a posh girls' school in Japan. The students initially refuse to believe the pint-sized Negi is their instructor, then they decide he's adorable and compete for his affection. The original series stressed the fan service comedy: When Negi tried to erase Asuna's memory of him using magic, he erased her panties by mistake. The "Re-Imagined" version emphasizes the Gothic fantasy elements, especially the conflict between Negi and the vampire Evangeline, who was defeated 15 years earlier by his father, The Thousand Master. Season Two is both talkier and choppier, with scenes from different episodes edited together to establish the altered storyline. The filmmakers use extensive narration over re-purposed footage and add moving mattes to static images. Not all the transitions are smooth: Negi frequently turns up with unexplained bumps and bruises, and Chamo the Ermine appears out of nowhere. There's less emphasis on well-endowed teenaged girls fondling a prepubescent little boy, although that disquieting element remains in the background. Neither version of Negima can really be called superior, and any preference between the two is a quesiton of personal taste.
